I’m a fitness freak, so spend alot of my spare time doing exercise. Swimming, gym, weight lifting and jogging. But my passion is hiking and I often travel to a national park called the peak district where it is very green and beautiful.
I have 15 guinea pigs I currently own and look after, they are very friendly and very cuddly. Some of their names are Atlas, Marshmallow and Reggie.

My Work:
My job is to care for mice kept for medical research purposes. I look after their welfare and make sure that the science that is done is done correctly according to law.
-
My Typical Day:
I wake at 6.20am and travel to my workplace ready for a 7.30am start. My team and I start by checking every single mouse that we have in the lab to make sure they are OK.Once a week the mice cages get cleaned out so we may do this. We will also give the mice any drugs that they are due to get as part of an experiment. We may also prepare paperwork for new studies that will start soon.Sometimes if a mouse is unwell we will need to humanely kill the mouse so that it does not suffer.

On a typical day I will change out of my normal clothes and put on scrubs like the kind you see doctors or nurses wear in a hospital. This is to keep the laboratory clean from outside pathogens and dirt.
Once inside the lab I will look at all of the mice we have to make sure they have food, water and are all healthy. If any of them are unwell I will give treatment and make sure they get better.
Sometimes I will give the mice doses of a drug and watch how they react. Sometimes I take blood samples from their tails or give them a solution to drink in their water bottles.
My team and I will then collect the data from these experiment and pass them onto the scientists who then look at the data to make progress towards improving our medical knowledge.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I was to win the £500 prize money I would use it to try and offer school children the chance to enter an animal facility or laboratory and come and see the environment that medical research is done in.Covid depending of course!
