In short, having good grades in the science and maths GCSEs helped, but only for getting to the next stage of education.

Having good grades in GCSE science and maths definitely helped my university application overall, partly because of the GCSEs themselves and partly because the 6th-form college I went to had minimum grade requirements to let you take certain A-levels. The A-levels themselves (as well as work experience and interviews) were the main thing that got me a place on the veterinary course, and once I was at university no-one ever stopped to look at my A-levels again, let alone GCSEs!
