      The virus? The virus began in animals where it was able to randomly mutate and aquire the ability to transmit to, and infect, humans. The mutations happen because the enzyme used to copy the virus genes is not 100% accurate and can sometimes introduce errors.

      The disease? The virus infects cells in our airways and lungs. This causes the cells to burst (and therefore die) or to be destroyed by our own immune system. This is why some of the symptoms are loss of smell and taste. This can also make it hard to breathe in severe disease.
