Boring answer maybe, but just covid. My previous work was all with bacteria not viruses, but I was able to use some of the lab techniques I had learned to help out on a covid research project after the pandemic started. Never thought I would be would be handling nasty viruses, but that is often the case in science as you collaborate with new people!
I worked with vaccinia virus which is a pox virus. It’s kind of the friendly brother of the evil small pox which was the deadliest virus that ever existed because it killed so many people. It’s not around anymore because of a global vaccination campaign :).
Vaccinia can’t really harm you unless you have a severely weakened immune system or if you get it directly into your eye.
