It’s hard to pin down any one cause for diseases and viruses like this, but many scientists think that we have greatly increased the odds of catching viruses like this by how we have treated the planet. As we encroach more and more on wildlife than we have before, we come into much closer contact with many animal species that we didn’t used to. This gives us the chance of catching diseases from them. So the diseases probably existed before, but if humans never came into contact with the animals carrying them, then we wouldn’t have been able to catch it.
