The vaccines actually do an amazing job and they’re why we’ve been able to reopen society as much as we have. It’s true they’re not completely able to stop someone from getting the virus, but they have dramatically reduced the risk of hospitalization and death, which has made a massive impact on the course of the pandemic.

The big thing to remember with vaccines is that it can be an arms race as the virus is always mutating and changing. So our vaccines will need to shift and change in order to keep up.

The vaccines actually work really well in preventing severe illness hospitalisation and death even with the new omicron variant and have saved millions of lives worldwide.

With previous variants they could also partly prevent infection but Omicron has found a way to still infect because it looks a little different so vaccines are currently being adapted to that.
I would be nice if the vaccine could be as effective as for example the one against Polio where you don’t get sick but also don’t spread the virus at all. I hope that we will get such vaccines eventually for SARS-CoV-2 as well.
