I research RNA viruses that can infect the cells in your brain. They are spread by mosquitoes so they occur in many different areas of the world. I research damage in the brain caused by diseases and viruses. I use cell processes to fight the RNA virus infection.
I teach biomedical science students about infectious diseases, which are caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. I teach about the damage the infections cause in our bodies. I discuss and how to diagnose and treat the infections.
I apply for more grant money to carry out my RNA virus research. I write about my research and I teach my PhD and master students. Have a look at my PhD student – Cameron Stockwell – profile.

I eat my breakfast quickly and then walk through the centre of Leeds to the University. I make my takeaway cup of coffee to bring with me on my walk to work.
I go to my office to check my emails. I chat with the people in my office and reply to emails. Then I go to the lecture theatre and teach my students. I have lectures about viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
I eat my lunch with my research group members. This is time for me to catch up on their research work and find out if I need to help them with anything.
This is a picture of the virus killing cells. The purple circles are the cells and the very small white circles inside the purple circles are where the virus has killed the cells.
After lunch I go to the lab and teach biomedical science students how to diagnose infections in patients. I demonstrate the different methods in the lab and then the students have time to practice the methods themselves. Some afternoons I teach my master and PhD students. I go back to my office or I go to the lab and I work on my research.
I walk home through the centre of Leeds to have my dinner.
