I’ve always wanted to be a scientist of some sorts but that’s gone through lots of different variations! First I wanted to be a marine biologist because I loved to scuba dive and then I considered being a doctor. It was only when I was doing my A Levels that I decided I wanted to research infectious diseases!

However at one point I thought I might go and study music performance…

I was fairly committed to either science or medicine from high school onwards. When I was younger I was briefly interested in all sorts of careers though, including archaeology, forensics (watched a lot of CSI..) and even barman (because I met a very cool one at a restaurant as a kid ha)

I originally wanted to be a detective, lawyer or medical doctor. I guess I combined all the skills for these by becoming a scientst.

But I do also think about leaving academia and using my skills in a different setting.

I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I loved dancing and singing when I was younger, and did lots of competitions, so that was a possibility. But I have always also enjoyed problem-solving and medical-related science subjects.

I always wanted to be a mathematician, scientist or an engineer. I now am a bit of all three.

I have always done a lot of creative writing, so a writer was always a possibility. As was a journalist as it used a different kind of writing.

But I was never someone who thought about future jobs a lot 🙂

I wanted to be a vet but then I spent a little bit of time helping a vet and I realised I preferred studying science.

A rock star or international cricketer! I didnt have the skills to do either. I just really wanted to work with animals and that led me to becoming a vet

I went through all sorts of dream jobs. As a kid I wanted to be an astronaut, then a vet, then for a long time I wanted to be a writer (and wrote a lot of stories!). When I reached my teenage years I was convinced I would be a musician in a rock band. Then, I discovered classical music and was 100% sure I would become a classical musician (which I studied for 3 years) and eventually an orchestra conductor. Then I thought, “you know what, I’ll do history of art”, because art was so interesting.

I only decided I’d do science and biology in my very last year of sixth form, thanks to a teacher who made me fall in love with doing experiments.

I had a very hard time deciding what I would study because I was interested in everything, and the career advisers at my school kept telling me that I would be good in either arts or science, which was not very helpful. I hope one day we’ll live in a world where both are connected and we are allowed to pursue all our interests rather than specialising in a single one. Happiness often comes from many, sometimes completely unrelated, places.
