We are still actively recruiting, so we’re definitely hoping for more people! We’re preparing 64,000 Covid positives sample a week for sequencing, so we need enough people to cover daily work from 08:00-20:00 (on different shifts, of course).

I run a team of about 30 scientists, mathematicians and statisticians. Science is a hugely collaborative subject and I work with people all over the world all the time. I especially like working with PhD students who often have fantastic ideas and energy and commitment. I am very keen to recruit more people into the team.

Personally it is just me and my boss at the moment, so I’d love more people in our lab!

But science does train too many PhD students for the number of available (academic/university) positions so we should really be thinking about whether that is fair to do and we still need to change how PhD student training works – to focus away from just academic science training and more to non-academic careers. Might not be what people necessarily want to hear but this is the reality of the current system
