Being involved in the pandemic response is great and part of why I like science so much; it’s something that can make a real impact and help people.

Covid has brought some of the most challenging and important problems in my career as a scientist. I feel that if I have saved even one life then it has all been worthwhile.

The scientific response to the pandemic has been amazing and so inspiring – I’m actually writing a documentary about this for later this year. Science is ultimately the thing that gets us out of a pandemic, that advances society and humanity and that saves people. It all sounds a bit grand when put like but it is absolutely true and I don’t think scientists get nearly enough recognition in wider society. This is why I got into science, to help as many people as possible.

Hi Salma, I find it very encouraging knowing that what I am doing/have done can and (probably) already has saved lives. It makes me want to do help even more people.
