COVID has affected my work in many ways. Like most, we have restrictions in place like social distancing, working in bubbles and everything else. At the same time, we are part of a project to sequence COVID-19 DNA and track the virus as it spreads. So we have much more work to do with less people… but we’ve gotten used to it by now!
COVID has meant that I have worked much more closely with people in many other areas of science. For example this week I am working as part of team with epidemiologists, biologists, physicists and social scientists. This is great. We will be working long hours on trying to model the impact of COVID on the homeless community.
The greatest change for me is less face to face interaction with people and more use of technology for meetings or presentations. In some cases this is a good thing as it means you can quickly meet with someone over the internet and get answers to questions but sometimes it has been tough as especially in science we like to sit in a room together and talk through ideas and help each other think problems through!
