To be a vet you need to get a veterinary degree from one of the ten vet schools in the UK. Here’s a weblink that discusses how to become a vet (https://www.bva.co.uk/your-career/becoming-a-vet/). A great way to see if you are interested in doing this is to get some work experience at your local vet practice.
To be an epidemiologist you don’t need to be a vet but you would need to get an epidemiology degree at a university (lots offer these).
The important thing to remember is that there is often more than one route to the end goal! My BSc was in Physiology, and my MSc was in international public health. I never took a molecular virology module at university, but still managed to get a place for a PhD in Virology out of pure determination!! Although I have always been fascinated by them, I wanted to have a broader skill set attained from undergraduate and postgraduate education!
Keep your options open and explore different ideas – once you’re on a journey, more opportunities open up!
The formal qualifications are a degree and a PhD in maths/stats or a subject with a lot of maths/stats in it like computer scine, physics or engineering. However, just (if not more) important is a creative approach to problem solving, a willingness to learn, and a determination not to give up when the going gets tough.
