Some of my lecturers would record their seminars, so I found it really helpful to listen to them when I was studying so I could concentrate on understanding and listening in class, then write notes at home when I could take my time.
I also find that writing an outline of what I learned from a specific lecture was really useful so I could highlight and make sure I understood/memorized the main points and would help me from getting distracted with other small pieces of information.
I love making flow charts or spider diagrams. I am a very visual learner so if I can ‘see’ the item I need to remember I find it more useful than just reading new info
Writing an outline of the new information – I still do this now – is really helpful. I also find writing the information out in a new way (for example write an essay on a topic) helps the information to stick for me. I often need to actually write a paper before the information really sticks these days. If it is something practical then I learn very much by doing.
I learn stuff by doing it. Maths is not a spectator sport. I love either solving problems or inventing new problems to solve, usually connecting maths to the real world.
I’m very much someone who is word based (I love to do creative writing!), so I would take extensive notes during lectures as that really helped me to absorb and retain new information. I would do the same when studying as I’d be far more likely to remember things after having written it all down.
I am a big fand of little hand written memory cards that I just carried around.. sometimes it also really helps if you want to study to not sit at your desk but to walk around or sit in the garden and these are much nicer to bring along than books 🙂
